The Classic Way to See Sun Moon Lake
A boat cruise linking the three main piers — Shuishe, Xuanguang, and Ita Thao — is the most relaxed and scenic way to experience the lake. Hop off at each pier, explore the surrounding attractions, then catch the next boat to continue. For first-time visitors, I always recommend spending a full day on the water.
Tickets & Schedule
- Day pass: NT$300/person (~US$10), unlimited rides all day
- Single trip: NT$100–150 (not good value — get the day pass)
- Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily
- Frequency: Every 20–30 minutes; extra boats on weekends

Pier 1: Shuishe
The main transport hub and liveliest area. Nearby: Shuishe Old Street for souvenirs, Meihe Garden lookout, Shuishe Dam Park (stunning bald cypress in Dec–Jan), and the Hanbi Trail (1.5 km, ~40 min). Allow 1–1.5 hours.
Pier 2: Xuanguang Temple
The smallest pier, but home to two icons. Grab a Grandma's tea egg (NT$13) the moment you step off, then walk uphill 5 minutes to Xuanguang Temple and the famous "Sun Moon Lake" stone marker. Continue 15 minutes to Xuanzang Temple for serene atmosphere and views of Lalu Island. Allow 45–60 minutes.
Pier 3: Ita Thao
The foodie stop. Ita Thao Food Street offers millet mochi, wild boar sausage, stretched shrimp, and more. Visit the Zhulu Cultural Market and stroll the lakeside path. From here, the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway connects to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village (cable car NT$300 round trip). Allow 1.5–2.5 hours.

Tips
- The lake is calm — seasickness is rare, but take medication if you're prone
- Bring sunscreen and a hat; shade on board is limited
- Last boat is at 5:00 PM — don't get stranded!
- Start at 9:00 AM on weekends to beat the midday rush
