A CNN Top-10 Cycling Trail
The Sun Moon Lake cycling path has been recognized by CNN as one of the world's top 10 most beautiful bike trails. Stretching approximately 30 kilometers around the lake, it offers stunning views of emerald waters framed by lush mountains at every turn.
Recommended Route
Start at the Xiangshan Visitor Center, which has ample parking and bike rental shops. The classic loop follows this route:
- Xiangshan Visitor Center to Shuishe Pier (3.4 km) — flat and easy, perfect for warming up
- Shuishe Pier to Wenwu Temple (5 km) — passes the scenic Shuishe Dam park, great for photos
- Wenwu Temple to Xuanguang Temple (4 km) — gentle incline through shaded forest
- Xuanguang Temple to Ita Thao (3 km) — lakeside path with views of Lalu Island
- Ita Thao to Toushe to Xiangshan (14 km) — the most challenging section with rolling hills
Short Half-Day Option
For a relaxed ride, do the Xiangshan to Shuishe round trip — just 7 km on flat terrain. Head out by 7 AM to beat the crowds and catch the morning light on the lake.
