Nantou's Biggest Annual Event
The Sun Moon Lake Fireworks & Music Festival runs every October through November and has been held for over twenty consecutive years. On weekend evenings throughout the festival, fireworks illuminate the sky above the lake while live music fills the waterfront. As local B&B owners, this is our busiest — and happiest — time of year.
Fireworks Over Water
The showpiece is the over-water fireworks display. Pyrotechnics launch from a platform in the middle of the lake, and each burst is mirrored perfectly on the calm water below — a doubled spectacle you won't see anywhere else. Each show lasts 20–30 minutes, choreographed to music.
Best Viewing Spots
- Shuishe Pier waterfront (top pick) — closest to the launch platform with full reflections; arrive by 4 PM to claim a spot
- Hanbi Trail — on the Hanbi Peninsula; fewer crowds, excellent photography angles
- Ita Thao Pier — across the lake; farther away but a full panorama plus food street snacks
- Xiangshan Visitor Center — unique angle with the building in the foreground
- Fireworks cruise — some boat operators offer special lake cruises; tickets NT$500–800
Festival Program
- Opening Night — usually the first or second Saturday of October; the grandest display
- Lakeside Concerts — well-known singers and bands perform each weekend
- Lake Loop Run — a fun-run event along the lake road
- Closing Night — mid-November finale, often the most spectacular show
Schedules are published about two months in advance on the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area website.
